2007 VW Passat Wagon and Sedan
A Teutonic Trio We drove the 2007 VW Passat 2.0T Wagon during a quick trip to Los Angeles. It looks great, handles just like the sedan and the wonderful turbo-charged 2-liter engine was great for blasting around LA's freeways. It has just a little bit of turbo lag but not enough to make most people notice. Coupled with the 6-speed automatic, it is entertaining and fuel efficient - adjectives not normally associated with wagons. The V6 4Motion got a longer workout on a trip from Atlanta, GA to Columbus, Ohio and back. It proved to be an excellent highway cruiser and actually got better MPG than published (28 MPG on the highway). That is surprising considering it was an all-wheel-drive model with the 6-cylinder engine. We came away very impressed with the sedan, although, unlike the wagon version, it faces some stiff competition in the marketplace. At an "as-tested" $39,880 the Passat 4Motion is in the same ballpart as some excellent AWD Sedans. The Chrysler 300C AWD offeres a V8 and AWD, the Subaru Legacy has AWD standard, and if driving excitement isn't a requirement, the Ford 500 has the room and AWD for thousands less. Advertisement
Alas, we all know that purchase decisions rarely rely on such practical considerations. The VW Passat is a great vehicle in all of it's iterations. With two engines, two body styles and two drive train options, chances are you'll find a combination right for you.
